Sometimes in the Winter and Spring, the nights can be chilly. If you are unlucky enough to have a cold or the flu, or have lost your appetite a little, sometimes a warming drink can make you feel better again. Here are some traditional remedies for coughs, colds and the flu, plus a nutritious egg drink. Whilst they might not help with the symptoms of the illness, the fact that you are pampering youself with a special warm drink will give you a boost. So grab a fleecy blanket, snuggle down on the sofa and get cosy! All of these recipes are very quick to make, around 5 minutes. The honey and lemon has around 120 calories per serving, the hot toddy about 45, and the malty milk ( which is calories dense for those who are “off their food” ) is approximately 200 calories. The lemon and orange juice in the recipes provide Vitamin C, but go easy on the alcohol! The aim is for a pick me up!

Hot Honey and Lemon Drink

Take the juice of half a lemon and mix with 2 tablespoons of honey in a jug.

Pour in a large mug of noiling water and stir well so that the honey dissolves.

Add a couple of cloves to the drink, and allow to cool slightly before drinking.

Serves 1.

Hot Toddy

Stir together 1 tablespoon of honey with 1 fluid ounce of either whisky, brandy or dark rum.

Add a couple of tablespoons of orange juice.

Take a cinnamon stick and stand this up un the mug.

Fill with very hot ( not boiling) water.

Garnish with a couple of cloves pressed into a slice of orange.

Serves 1.

Malty Milk

Mash one small, over ripe banana in a basin until it makes a smooth paste.

Add a couple of teaspoons of malt extract and a teaspoon of honey.

Beat in a raw agg and mix well using a whisk or fork.

Add three quarters of a pint of low fat milk and whisk well.

This “meal in a glass” is very nutritious and tasty if you have lost your appetite, and is packed with goodness. Be wary – it does contain raw egg, so the elderly and the very young or those with weakened immune systems should not drink this, just in case.

Serves 2. `

All of the drinks can be prepared in advance and kept in a vacuum flask until needed.
