The variations on milkshake flavors are endless. If , like me, you have a child who does not like the taste of milk on it´s own, then try some of these tasty variations in order to boost their daily calcium intake. Use semi-skimmed milk, unless your child has to watch their fat intake, and use a blender for the best results. Serve immediately, although you can store any left over shake in a vacuum flask for a short time in the fridge. So delicious, you can guarantee that you won´t need to store it for long! All recipes make 1 large or 2 small shakes and the method is the same. Place all the ingredients in a blender, liquidise until frothy, pour and enjoy!

Raspberry

  • ¼ pint of low fat milk
  • ¼ pint low fat raspberry yoghurt
  • 1 scoop of raspberry ice cream ( or vanilla will do)

This recipe can be adapted to any flavour of ice cream or yoghurt, so try pineapple, strawberry, mango, kiwi... the choice is endless.

Plain vanilla ice cream works well with more exotic fruit flavours.

Apple shake

  • ¼ pint low fat milk
  • 3 fluid ounces of apple juice
  • 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream
  • pinch of cinnamon

Crunchy Choccy

  • 2 tablespoons of chocolate flavored ice cream sauce
  • ¼ pint low fat milk
  • 1 scoop chocolate ice cream
  • small handful of chocolate chips small handful of “Maltesers” or similar sweets(be warned, this one has the highest calorie content!)

Fresh berry shake

  • ¼ pint of low fat milk
  • 2 oz of mixed fresh berries
  • 1 tsp of honey
  • small handful of crushed ice

Chocolate Mint Heaven

  • 4 or 5 drops of peppermint flavor or essence
  • ¼ pint of low fat milk
  • 1 scoop of chocolate ice cream
  • 1 scoop of mint ice cream
  • 6 mint chocolate sticks

Chocolate Banana Shake

  • 2 bananas
  • ½ pint of milk
  • 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream(use chocolate ice cream for a chocolate and banana variation)

Most of these make an excellent breakfast drink, but if none of these recipes appeal to your kids, try ringing the changes with different flavours of ice cream and yogurt in the shakes. For adults, mix in a spoonful of a favourite liquer for an indulgent summer drink. Or if you are not counting calories, then try throwing a handful of your kids favourite sweets into the blender for a real treat.
