Healthy and Satisfying Snack Options: The Savory Stuff PDF Print E-mail
Feeding by Age - Pregnancy Diet
Written by Annie Mueller
I'm not usually big on sweets, though I do crave more sugar during pregnancy. I like lots of fruit and yogurt and Snickers. To keep myself from binging on the sweet stuff under the guise of "I need something to snack on so the baby doesn't get hungry," I try to keep lots of good, non-sweet snack options on hand. That way I have a choice. I can enjoy a sweet snack, like an apple with caramel dip and some yogurt and granola, and when the next snack attack hits I can forego the sweet and still be satisfied. Let's view the options.

Try it salty and simple:
A handful of mixed nuts
A cup of cottage cheese
A few slices of smoked ham or turkey (good stuff; avoid the deli meat)
Baby carrots and ranch dip
Snow peas and soy sauce

Try some of these combinations:
Smoked almonds and cheese cubes
Cheese toast
A whole wheat bagel, toasted, with low-fat cream cheese
Whole grain crackers and cheese slices
Celery sticks with peanut butter

Or whip up a quick treat:
Cheese quesadilla: fill a tortilla with shredded or sliced cheese; fold in half and cook in a skillet about 3 minutes on each side, or until cheese is melty; eat with salsa, if desired.
Fresh guacamole: peel and pit a fresh avocado; mash with a fork, then stir in a squeeze of lime juice and a little salt and pepper; eat with tortilla chips or pita chips.
Hard-boiled eggs: heat a saucepan of water to boiling; add eggs, cover, and cook on low for 12 minutes; remove from heat, drain, and rinse eggs in cool water; peel and eat with salt and pepper.
Tuna salad: mash up one of your hard-boiled eggs with a fork; drain a can of tuna; mix the egg, tuna, and 1 tablespoon of sour cream or mayo in a bowl; salt and pepper to taste; great on crackers or in pita bread. (Don't do more than one can of tuna a week.)
Bagel sandwich: toast a whole wheat bagel; spread with a thin layer of cream cheese, a little leftover meat (ham, shredded chicken, bacon) and your favorite condiments (pickles, sliced onion, what-have-you); top with a piece of lettuce.
