I've gotten in trouble a few times with my midwife because of high
ketones during my prenatal visits. Nope, that's not a new kind of
ringtone. Ketones are indicators of the body having to burn stored fat.
That doesn't sound bad up front, but for a pregnant woman, it's not a
good thing.

The original recipe came from Smitten Kitchen. I've tweaked it to fit both my energy level (simplifying a few preparatory steps) and whatever ingredients I have on hand. The last thing I want to do is run to the grocery store for that one item I don't have for a recipe.

Herbs are a gentle, natural treatment that can help you calm down, relieve stress, reduce muscle tension, clear up congestion, ease nausea, and get to sleep. Herbs are also very powerful, however, and some can cause adverse reactions (such as uterine contractions) during pregnancy. The herbs and tea combinations listed below are safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding:

I'm not usually big on sweets, though I do crave more sugar during pregnancy. I like lots of fruit and yogurt and Snickers. To keep myself from binging on the sweet stuff under the guise of "I need something to snack on so the baby doesn't get hungry," I try to keep lots of good, non-sweet snack options on hand. That way I have a choice. I can enjoy a sweet snack, like an apple with caramel dip and some yogurt and granola, and when the next snack attack hits I can forego the sweet and still be satisfied. Let's view the options.

Sometimes you crave sweet stuff, and
that's fine. But don't give in to the pregnancy urges that tell you
to consume the entire carton of ice cream or package of Oreos. You're
not helping yourself out at all. Sweet food won't kill you if eaten
in reasonable amounts, so have a little bit of what you crave. Then
help yourself to one of these better for you sweet snack options.

There are many nutritional and diet
advice books that recommend eating several smaller meals throughout
the day rather than two or three heavy meals. The theory is that
doing so keeps your energy and your metabolism at a higher level,
rather than loading your body down with a heavy load of food to work
through and creating up and down energy and metabolic cycles as your
digestive system processes it all.
