This recipe is a little effort in time, but worth it. If you want to chop everything and then store it for the next day to assemble that is good too. My family loves these subs. My toddler especially. Plus you can take the meatballs and put them in the food processor and mix with a little filtered water and rice or a sweet potato and it's great for older babies.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 lb ground hamburger
1/2 lb ground turkey
3 Tablespoons Garlic
2 Tablespoons Dried Basil
1 Tablespoon Dried Oregano
1 Large green pepper
1 Medium Onion
1 Large Egg
3/4 Cup seasoned bread crumbs
1 Tablespoon Crushed red pepper
2 Tablespoons Olive oil
What to do:
Chop the pepper and onion into even chopped pieces and mix in a bowl with olive oil, spices and garlic. Saute in a sauce pan until onion carmelize and peppers are browned a little, but all still on the raw side. In a large bowl beat the egg and bread crumbs together until well mixed and then dump the two meats into the bowl and mix very well. When pepper mixture is done, dump into the large bowl with rest of the ingredients. Mix with large spoon until all is cooled and then get your hands into it and mix it all up. Then in a large skillet heat oil on medium heat. When hot, dump hand made meatballs into oil and brown on all sides and then place the balls into a large soup pot until all balls are done. When done, dump sweet onion pasta sauce over the balls and heat for about 15 minutes on low. Leave in pot, with heat off for another 5 minutes.
