With so much of the food now available traveling hundreds of miles, or packaged and processed and preserved, being a locavore is becoming increasingly important for foodie moms. Local food is about sustaining your community and local farms. It's about supporting your family's health by eating what is fresh, local and in season. Most of all, local food is about eating delicious food.

Last spring our family joined a CSA for the first time through a local farm. Each week, we pick up a boxed share of freshly picked, organic produce from a designated location. After a friend recommended this farm, I joined, knowing that I love fresh food, and it would be great to have a large portion of our produce paid for in advance. Little did I know how much more this experience would provide.

While farmers markets may have once been the purview of young urban
professionals, their presence and popularity has exploded even in the
suburbs in the past several years. As people increasingly become aware
of the importance of knowing where their food comes from, in light of
the recent salmonella and e.coli outbreaks, it is natural that people
turn first to their local farmers markets. If you haven't checked out your local market yet this year, go now! September is the most bountiful month of the year in most of the U.S. Shopping at a farmers market is quite
different than shopping at a big box grocery store, so here are a few
tips to help you avoid being overwhelmed by your first trip, or to make
your shopping outings more effective.

Peach Salsa is a local food here in the South and introduced to me by my good friend Lou Anne from South Carolina. What began as a spicy blend of tomatoes, peppers, onion and cilantro has expanded to include pineapple, mango, and peaches. Peach Salsa is a nice soft taste and texture combination. It is truly a special local treat made here in the peach raising part of the South. This nouvelle blend of tomatoes and peaches serves as an excellent side dish for snacking, a great little basting sauce for grilling chicken, and so many other ways to enjoy it.

This summer was our first as members of a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). We joined after reading the book Plenty by Alisa Smith and J.B. McKinnon. It was an eye opening book that stressed the importance of eating local food and encouraged readers to eat food that is produced within 100 miles of his/her home. Joining a CSA has been one of the best decisions our family has made.
