Once your baby has begun to enjoy eating solids it is a great time to introduce new flavours. Baby is going to be eating your cooking for many years so now is the best time to introduce the flavours you use the most. A great way to introduce some stronger flavours is with homemade spaghetti bolognese.
If your family love flavours such as onions, garlic and tomato then bolognese is a great recipe to introduce these flavours to your baby and an easy way to cook for the whole family at the same time. The below recipe will feed two adults, a toddler and a baby.
Ingredients
-
Lean mince beef (500g)
-
Beef stock cube
-
1 onion
-
1 clove of garlic
-
Dried oregano and basil
-
1 tin of chopped tomatoes or 1 jar of passata
-
1 packet of dried spaghetti
-
Pepper
-
Cheese (any pasteurised cheese - as long as baby is over 6 months old)
Recipe
- Use a little oil in the bottom of a pan. Heat gently.
- Dice the onion and crush or thinly slice the garlic. Add to the pan and cook on a low heat until the onions are slightly brown and translucent.
- Add the mince and cook until browned and cooked thoroughly
- Add a touch of pepper, a pinch of basil and a pinch of oregano
- Add the tomato/ passata and leave to simmer on a very low heat (30 minutes minimum up to 2 hours if possible)
- Remove baby's portion then add beef stock cube to the remainder for the adults (salted products not recommended for baby)
- Half an hour before serving bring a pan of water to the boil. Add a touch of oil then the desired amount of spaghetti. Leave for 15 minutes or until the spaghetti is soft
- Add some spaghetti to the bolognese mixture for the baby, add some grated cheese and use a food processor or hand blender to blend into a puree
Buon appetito!
