Many babies suffer from wind, colic or indigestion. This homemade Apple Settler is a yummy way to use fennell and ginger to help their digestive system to naturally deal with the new digestive challenges of weaning. Fennel has long been used in remedies such as Gripe Water to ease colic. It relaxes the smooth muscle lining of the digestive tract and has been used throughout history for stomach upsets, indigestion and wind. It has a strong aniseed taste so for baby's sensitive tastebuds should be used in moderation.

Another digestion aid is ginger which many new mothers discovered during their morning sickness months during pregnancy. If ginger was often found in your diet when pregnant then baby may already be used to this sweet, warming flavour. Ginger is warming and soothing and eases nausea.

Ingredients

  • 1 Apple
  • Ginger root
  • 1 fresh fennel
  • Sugar
  • 1 baby biscuit (optional)

Recipe

  1. Put a cup of water in a pan and bring to the boil.

  2. Add 1 teaspoon of white sugar, ½ a teaspoon of grated fennel and 1 teaspoon of grated ginger root into the water and leave to simmer for half an hour. Strain through a sieve to remove the fennel and ginger and leave to cool.

  3. Peel and chop the apple into small cubes.

  4. Put 2 tablespoons of the ginger and fennel syrup into a pan then add the apple. Leave to cook on a very low heat until the apple has become a purée.

  5. Leave to cool then test to make sure that the fennel and ginger are not too strong. If they are too strong add a little more water or another puréed apple.

  6. For a thicker treat make an Apple Tummy Settler Crumble by adding a crushed baby biscuit.

Any leftover syrup can be used to add to juice for adults or older children.
