The avocado is a serious power food for babies. With more than 25
essential nutrients and phytonutrients such as fiber, potassium, lutein
and vitamins B and E, avocados can be part of a healthful addition to
infants’ and toddlers’ diets, according to Avocado Nutrition Facts at Avacado.org . This homemade baby food recipe incorporates avocado with the sweet taste of pears and the iron and fiber-rich lentil.
Better yet, avocado is easier than most healthy baby food options.
It is already soft, so you don't need to cook it. You can literally
peel your avocado, cut the pulp away from the core, mash and serve.
Diced, it also later serves as one of the better healthy finger foods for toddlers.
This avocado, pear and lentil baby food recipe will allow you to make a
batch to serve some fresh and save some frozen, but you can adjust
amounts as needed.
Ingredients
- 4 fresh, ripe avocados
- 2 pears
- 1/2 cup of dry lentils
Preparation
- Prepare your lentils according to the package directions
- Peel, core and dice your pears. Toss them in to soften in the boiling water of the lentils, or boil separately.
- Strain lentils and pears, and place together in a mixing bowl. Add a couple ice cubes and stir briskly to cool the mixture.
- Peel avocado, and slice off pulp around the core. Dice up and add to the mixture.
- Put all ingredients in blender or food processor, or mash in
the mixing bowl. You want a puree for babies on first-time solids, and
you want a lumpy mash for advanced feeders.
- Serve fresh and store the remaining baby food. You can place
small amounts in jars to freeze (but leave room for expansion) or place
in ice crube trays to freeze and place in freezer bags.
