While this certainly is not my favorite time of the year, it’s pretty much the only time I can sit around and dream of my gardens for the coming growing season. Around February, I start getting punchy and irritated that Mother Nature and Old Man Winter are collaborating to keep me from the plants and the soil. But then, I spot my seed catalogs.
Even in my frustration, I am aware that winter is the season for dreaming and planning. All things are possible in the garden during the cold months. Every winter, I take advantage of the darker days by doing a little (or a lot) of armchair gardening with this year’s seed catalogs.
Among the Great Seed And Plant Catalogs are:
How to Armchair Garden
The first step is to make sure you have plenty of catalogs to peruse and dog-ear. The next step is to look at your garden beds and decided what you like that’s already there, and what you would like to add.
More often than not, gardeners will want to add a whole other garden bed. If that’s the case, decide what kind of bed you would like; veggies, perennial, and the like. If the new bed will be about flowers, think about color, height, and requirements for individual flowers and vegetables.
Now, gather your catalogs, paper, pencils, coffee, and snuggle into your favorite armchair and begin drawing, marking pages, and planning your garden for the coming season.
The first pass you make through the catalogs, you mark everything that strikes your fancy with a certain color pen. Everything. Now choose a different colored pen and make a second pass marking only the things you really want. The third time through, you’ll try to mark what you think you can honestly either one; have a place for, and two; can afford.
Of course, when you place your order for your seeds and plants, you take one more peek at the catalog you are ordering from and choose two more because it’s important to try a couple of things you’ve never tried before.
