I asked several of my friends who have kids between 15 months and 3 years old to tell me about their toddlers' eating habits, including favorite foods, things they refuse to eat and the weirdest meal they've ever fed their kids.
First of all, many thanks to Mandi, Eva, AJU5's mom, Trilby and Gina for participating!
What is your toddler's favorite food?
- Mandi has 2 boys, ages 2 1/2 and 17 months. One loves mashed potatoes, the other, grits.
- Eva's 17 month-old daughter loves Annie's mac and cheese (also a favorite in my house), applesauce, plain yogurt and veggie dogs.
- Gina's son, almost 2, is a fan of strawberries, cheese and crackers.
- Trilby's 2 1/2 year old son is a fan of mac and cheese and yogurt, and also loves pizza.
- AJU5's mom has a 17 month old daughter who used to be crazy about fruit snacks, but has recently started to refuse them.
- My 16 month old would eat nothing but blueberries and string cheese if we'd let him.
What food have you tried to feed your toddler over and over again with no success?
The moms gave a wide variety of answers for this one. Several little ones don't like meat, either because they can't chew it well or they just don't enjoy the flavor. Some kids have texture issues with things like strawberries. Gina's son refuses to eat anything mixed together, even macaroni and cheese! Some kids refuse broccoli, but others seem to love it.
What are some foods you would not expect a toddler to like that your child loves?
These answers were fun! Our kids like:
- Grape Tomatoes
- Hummus with red bell peppers
- Olives--actually a LOT of these kids like olives! Eva's daughter likes them salty and spicy. My little boy eats them on his pizza or with cheese as a snack.
- Zucchini and summer squash
- Chinese food
What are your toddler's favorite snacks?
No real surprises here, but quite a variety, including:
- Goldfish crackers
- Cheerios
- Fruit snacks
- Cheese (answers ranged from shredded cheese to American singles, string cheese to marble cheddar cubes)
- Veggie Fries
- Fresh Fruit
- Gummy Savers
- Nuts
- "Puffs"
- Yogurt
- Granola bars
- "Ants on a log"(celery with peanut butter and raisins)
- Smoked tofu
What does your toddler drink?
Most of our kids stick to milk, water, and diluted juice. A few little ones enjoy Kool-Aid, lemonade and smoothies.
Eva's daughter enjoys "green" smoothies. I'm holding out hope that she'll share that recipe!
What's the strangest meal you've ever fed your child?
- A piece of ham and a marshmallow.
- Browned hamburger meat, a handful of black beans, 1 brussels sprout, 2 strawberries, shredded mozzarella cheese, and 3 baby Gerber cheese puffs.
- Mac and cheese with peas mixed into it, 3 grapes, half a container of yogurt, and some bacon left over from breakfast.
- Blueberries, string cheese, baked beans, a yeast roll.
And finally...
How often does your child throw food at you or onto the floor?
You can probably guess the answer to this one. Our moms said:
- "Launches Cheerios off the spoon."
- "Everyday. Every meal. A wet rag comes to the table with us every time we eat. I cried last weekend because I felt I spent more time on my hands and knees cleaning the floor and table than playing with my boys."
- "We're past that now, but we have a younger baby, so it will start up again soon!"
- "Never at me anymore, but on the floor at least every meal. We’re working with him on not throwing food on the floor, but I suspect the dog’s willingness to clean it up is sabotaging our efforts."
- "Um...every single meal! Except at our house it typically doesn't make it to the floor because we have the dog, aka Hoover!"
- "Let's put it this way: I need a bib more than my child does!"
