Feeding by Age - Feeding Teens
Written by Bonnie Sayers
Today, my teen turned fourteen. Since he is homeschooled, he has the opportunity to accompany me to various events around the city of Los Angeles. The Farmers Market is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year with festivities throughout 2009.

Just the other day marked the second visit we have made to Farmers Market in the past few months. No matter what time of the day you arrive, there are parking lots filled with visitors. A vendor can validate your parking ticket for you. There are over one hundred shops, restaurants and grocers to satisfy any palette.

The selections range from fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, baked goods, poultry and fish, wine and beer bars, ice cream, nuts, popcorn & candy, coffee, soft driks, tea, pizza, barbeque, Greek, Mexican, Brazilian, Cajun, deli, French and many other delicacies to choose from.

The Farmers Market has rows of vendors to get fresh food for takeout or to dine in at the many tables lined along the walkways. It is always bustling with locals and out of towners to find their hometown cuisine or try a new specialty from another region of the world.

This is also a great opportunity to learn about foods and try something out of the ordinary. I specifically make a stop here for a New Jersey delight that originates from Trenton. The meat vendors at the Los Angeles Farmers Market get porkroll straight from New Jersey. Some know it is as Taylor Ham. I always request the large size roll to be sliced and give some to my neighbor.

Some of the Restaurants and Specialty Foods you will find at the Los Angels Farmers Market include:

  • The French Cape Company
  • Johnny Rockets
  • Chipotle Mexican Grill
  • The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
  • The Gumbo Pot
  • Peking Kitchen
  • Singapore's Banana Leaf
  • Bryan's Pit Barbeque
  • Pampas Grill
  • Tusquellas Fish & Oyster Bar
  • Hungtingon Meats & Sausage (porkroll)
  • Thee's Continental Pastries
  • Dupar's Pie Shop
  • Gill's Old Fashioned Ice Cream
  • Littlejohn's English Toffee House

There are aisles with vendors on both sides that can make the food choice a difficult one. This is a great spot to meet up with others and enjoy the dining experience. It is a nice mix of young and older folks here.

On our previous visit we had chocolate ice cream shakes from one vendor and grilled cheese sandwiches with the best pickles. It is nice and shaded, yet you are still outdoors and can feel a good breeze.

When visiting Los Angeles I suggest taking the family to the Farmers Market.  Your teen will enjoy healthy eating while on a culinary journey around the world.

avatar My son is same age and we also homeschool. He goes to the store with me always and he has always enjoyed searching for new produce and other items to try out. He finds it all interesting and it often spurs his interest in geography, social studies, history, and even science.
