Potatoes are not only a tasty ingredient but also one of the first foods that many babies learn to love. A great and filling weaning food, here are some perfect ways to serve potatoes to your baby. Potatoes are not the most nutrient rich vegetable so,although they are great for a quick weaning meal, they are best when used as a base for other more nutritious ingredients.
The Original - Mashed Potato
Ingredients
3 Potatoes
1 teaspoon of unsalted butter
1 fluid ounce of baby's own formula (under 6 months)
Recipe
-
Bring a pan of water to the boil
-
Put the potatoes (chopped into medium sized chunks - not slices) into the water and leave for 40 minutes or until very soft
-
Drain the water off, add the milk and butter then mash with a potato masher, fork or food processor
-
Leave to cool then seperate a portion for baby and refrigerate the remainder for the following day
Fish Pie
Ingredients
Mashed potato prepared as above.
1 small fillet of white fish such as cod
Dried Parsley
Recipe
-
Prepare the mash as above
-
Wrap the fish fillet in tin foil. To prevent drying out put a small knob of butter on top of the fillet before sealing the top
-
Put the fillet in the oven and cook for 30 – 40 minutes at 350 degrees F/ 169 degrees C / gas mark 3
-
Once cooked put in a bowl with a little boiled water or some of baby's formula and mash to the desired consistency. Mix in the dried parsley and mash, separate one portion then freeze or refrigerate the remainder
Cottage Pie
Ingredientsfir
50g of beef mince
1 carrot
¼ cup fresh or frozen peas
Mash potato prepared as above
Recipe
-
Chop the carrot into small cubes and put into a pan of boiling water. Leave to simmer for 20 minutes
-
Add the peas and leave for a further 10 minutes. Drain and put to one side.
-
Fry the mince in a touch of unsalted butter until thoroughly cooked. Add the peas and carrots and if for a weaning beginner use a hand blender or food processor to puree. If for an older baby leave as is.
-
Mix the ingredients together then separate one portion and freeze or refrigerate the remainder
