I have six kids. The youngest is three months old, so I spend a lot of time feeding her. It's not good news to me that the other children are hungry. It's absolutely necessary that the kids learn to cook!

I recently made banana bread with my three young children. I told my oldest daughter, 16, the one who cooks well by herself to do another chore. My 13 year old son was also occupied. I did this on purpose. I needed tthe banana bread done--rotting bananas, you see, and I wanted an activity to do with the three little kids, ages 4, 6, and 8. I was holding/nursing the baby at the time.

I had the 4 year old peel and mash the banans. He happily complied. I put the 8 year old on the mixer--she could hardly wait to run it--mixing happily between every addition of wet ingredients. I assigned the dry ingredients to the 6 year old. With one hand, I could help her while she did most of the measuring, pouring and stirring.

The 3 little kids made wonderful banana bread. The great part was how satisfied everyone was with their individual task.

Everybody helped to eat the bread--gone in 50 seconds!
